Arctica was established in 2001, with Niall McQuitty being a founder member, to deliver architectural design and management expertise to the food processing, industrial development and commercial construction sectors.
The process engineering discipline was set up in 2006 and Jon Fowler became engineering director in 2013. A cost management discipline was set up in 2012 and Lee Chapman became cost and project management director in 2015.
We offer a ‘one stop shop’ for food processing and other industrial and infrastructure construction projects which require a blend of architectural, process and project management skills. We bring the same disciplines to bear in other areas such as education, where we have developed valuable experience.
Our office is in the historic market town of Stamford in Lincolnshire just five minutes off the A1, five minutes’ walk from the centre of town and a ten-minute walk from the railway station.
We undertake work from initial feasibility studies up to multi-million-pound construction contracts. We also have a wealth of experience delivering manageable packages within much larger capital projects, such as architectural input to a waste to energy plant with a civils value of £40 million and a total capital budget of £150 million.
Our principal areas of focus are the food industry, industry and infrastructure, and education. We deliver architectural services, cost consultancy and process engineering, project management, contract management, value engineering and interim management services.

Niall McQuitty Dipl Arch RIBA
Niall has operated at a senior level since1998 and at director level since helping to found Arctica in 2001. His time working for commercial clients on tight programmes has generated considerable experience of managing projects during the construction phase. This has led to the development of an organised and disciplined approach whilst still maintaining a robust design focus.
Having gained a wealth of experience with computer aided design packages early in his career, Niall’s role now encompasses all aspects of making sure that Arctica provides the up to date IT facilities expected from a leading multi-disciplinary design consultancy.
Niall’s project experience covers energy from waste generation, food manufacturing, offices, ship building and repair, restaurants, defence and government organisations.
Jonathan has worked in the food industry for over 25 years and at executive level since 2003. His career experiences cover engineering management, project management, process design, business improvement and operational management. His last ‘factory’ role was as manufacturing manager at a Waitrose-dedicated prepared salads business for Bakkavör.
He has successfully delivered over £40 million of capital expenditure on a range of projects from new builds through to factory extensions and efficiency improvement through to process innovation projects.
Jonathan is a member of the Institute of Leadership and Management and has strong all-round people values and experience in executive leadership, with key abilities to design and implement training and motivate personnel through strategic and cultural changes.
Lee Chapman MRICS
Lee has worked extensively in food processing and manufacturing. He has delivered pre-and post-contract cost management / quantity surveying services throughout the UK and has also delivered projects in Brazil, the United States of America and Saudi Arabia ranging from process line extensions and full-scale refurbishments through to large new build facilities.
He spent 14 years at Davis Langdon where he worked with leading food companies and blue-chip manufacturing companies and has been a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors since 2004.
All our staff are qualified in their specific areas of expertise within the practice including RICS, RIBA, CIAT and CEng.

This includes working with industry bodies such as Campden BRI and the Food Standards Agency to help shape the mass of regulations and codes of practice that govern food production, processing and distribution and how they apply to the design and construction of food processing plants.
