The Situation

An independent school required new science facilities to accommodate increasing pupil numbers and to house new equipment that had recently been purchased. The existing laboratory facilities were to be retained and required refurbishment.

The Challenge

Alterations and refurbishment of the chemistry department had to be undertaken in a two phase approach, spread across two summer holidays to avoid disruption to the normal school routine. An additional laboratory within the existing floor area was needed. The project required the controlling of existing asbestos and timely project management to ensure that construction work was completed within the holiday period, with no disruption to other classrooms above, below or adjacent to the laboratories.

Resolution

Working as principal designers, cost consultants and project managers, Arctica oversaw the delivery of two refurbished classrooms completed successfully, on time and within budget. This included some enabling works for the final phase. The refurbished classrooms were delivered complete with replacement furniture to include defined wet and dry desk areas, teacher’s demonstration bench, replacement ceilings, flooring and windows. The project also included mechanical and engineering upgrades to bring the facility in line with current ventilation and indoor air quality regulations.
