The Situation

Southwark Council in London was seeking to develop a £25 million integrated waste management facility to handle all of the borough’s household waste and recycling requirements.

The Challenge

The waste facility had to comprise a mechanical and biological treatment plant, a material recovery facility, a household waste reuse and recycling centre and an educational visitor centre.
A staff block was also required which had to feature sustainable construction.

Resolution

We provided architectural consultancy services including a site-wide fire strategy an effective building design that respected and enhanced the terms of the original planning approval.
The waste facility, treatment plant and recycling centre achieved a BREEAM ‘good’ rating.
A separate office block for Southwark Council employees and waste operator staff incorporates micro-power generation through PV panels to provide 20 per cent of its energy requirements. It achieved a BREEAM ‘very good’ rating.
